Herne Bay Ladies avenged the men's defeat to Brentwood Town 24 hours earlier when they triumphed over the Essex club's Ladies team in searing heat on a cracked, dry, dusty pitch that offered little assistance in playing the slicker passing on the ground game that supporters have come to appreciate from this resurgent Herne Bay Ladies team. Nevertheless, the game was as good as won by half-time with strikes from Jemma Barton, Lauren Harris and a dipping shot from distance from skipper Kate Foster.
The heat and frustration regarding a few decisions from the man in the middle seemed to unnerve Bay after the break and repeatedly they had to regroup and concentrate that much harder. Brentwood took advantage on two occasions to make the scoreline look less of a rout. Lucy Page scored an absolute belter 3 minutes into the half for the Bay and Izzy Quinney won the ball in a tackle from the 'keeper who had tried to clear just outside the area, going on to slot the ball into the empty net. Herne Bay Ladies have now won both pre season games to date and now ravel to Godalming Town next Sunday.
"We haven't been at our best today, the conditions weren't great, the pitch didn't suit our style of play and it was hot", said manager Peter Whittaker, "but I've seen now how we react to opponents who play the physical game. We still got the result though!"
