Herne Bay’s last home Bank Holiday victory was as long ago as April 2014 but Tom Carlton laid that voodoo to rest. He was the architect of the victory, giving Bay their first double over the Lilywhites for 10 years and winning the Man of the Match Award.
Carlton, roaming the right wing berth, engineered all the goals in front of the season’s best crowd of 331. The first on 26 minutes was a defence splitting pass that Kingsley Aikhionbare met in no-man’s land, between keeper Simon Overland and the defenders, to hammer home. A minute before the break Carlton’s deep cross was met by the head of Josh Wisson, the ball struck the upright, and Connor Wilkins was on hand to finish.
Bay’s dominance continued after the re-start and just seven minutes in it was Carlton, marauding along the flank, who slid the ball through to Nassim Dukali, his one touch moved the ball along the line, to find Aikhionbare who shot home his second. Herne Bay continued to press, and the score could well have been doubled, as several players, including Carlton went close. With three minutes added on, the clean sheet, and a second 3-0 win over Faversham this season, seemed assured, until Jono Richardson hesitated, and Ashley Miller latched onto the ball, rounded Ben Hunter, and gave the visitors a consolation. A complete and reassuring performance from all the team.
