Herne Bay, unbeaten for nine games on their travels since Boxing Day, travelled to Pilot Field to take on Hastings United who had not won for 10 games and had tasted victory just three times all season in front of their home crowd. To add to that this was 6th against 22nd but as we all know nothing is simple when it comes to football.

The Arrows were full of optimism following a change of ownership and were boosted by the return of Josh Jirbandey on a break from his American scholarship, linking up with skipper Sean Ray at the heart of the home defence whilst Bay were without Liam Quinn, following the birth of his son, and Dan Bent.

Tyrell Richardson-Brown opened the chances in only the fourth minute, but headed well wide after being picked out by Luke Turner's crossfield pass. He was presented with an even better chance by Sam Cruttwell's long ball later in the half, beating Jack Delo to the ball and sidestepping the now stranded keeper, only to lose composure at the critical moment and send a bobbling effort into the side netting when he had time to have taken a touch. Richardson-Brown also nodded across goal from a right wing cross by Steve Brinkhurst, and an inswinging Cruttwell delivery fell narrowly wide of the far post, while the sole moment of alarm at the other end resulted from Mark Lovell's tumble in the area over a Richard Rose challenge, which ultimately and curiously led to a United free kick.

Lovell and Jirbandey traded shots on target shortly after the restart, while Lovell and Danny Spiller went close to breaking the deadlock as Bay enjoyed their first bright spell of the afternoon around the hour mark. It wasn't long before Richardson-Brown was back in the action though, heading against the top of the crossbar from a cross by Patterson down the left, before the two combined again to help create Olalekan Bankole's decisive strike. In the seventy-first minute a shot from a Marlon Patterson through ball ballooned up off the crossbar for Bankole to nod home the rebound.

The seventy-seventh minute introduction of James Turner from the bench nearly proved pivotal to Herne Bay’s faltering play-off prospects, the substitute first sweeping a shot just wide from a Danny Walder cross, and then shooting straight at Hastings’s custodian Josh Pelling after working space just outside the U's area. But the real heartstopping moment occurred in the last of five added minutes, Turner claiming a penalty for a shove in the back by his United namesake, the referee was unimpressed.

One point from six against drop zone sides ended Bay’s outside hopes of a play-off place and there was surprisingly little offered in the final third with Bay having now scored just once in four matches. Nevertheless Bay are on course for their best-ever finish since being promoted as Kent League champions in 2012,
