Defensive errors cost Herne Bay dear at Salters Lane on Bank Holiday Monday, defeated 4-1 by Faversham Town, the score surely flattered the Town. 2-0 down after 25 minutes the Bay fought back well and reduced the arrears going in 2-1 at half time. Two soft goals in the second half were the Bay’s undoing.
From the kick off Faversham pushed Herne Bay deep into their own half and after only 3 minutes they forced a corner and Jack Harris hit the post with 'keeper Jack Delo well beaten. On 8 minutes former Bay player Darren Marsden went close but Delo saved well. In the 14th minute Faversham took the lead when Wayne Wilson found Dean Grant with a great cross his header went in off of Jordan Casey’s head .
Twice Jack Delo had to clear his lines with well directed punches, preventing Marsden and Wilson efforts. On 22 minutes the Bay were unlucky when a snap shot from Sam Hasler was well saved by Town’s keeper Simon Overland, low to his left. On 25 minutes Faversham went 2-0 up following a Wilson corner Matt Bourne rose completely unmarked to head past Delo. Within 2 minutes the Bay reduced the lead when Ben Brown found space and slid the ball past Overland. As half time neared chances fell to Jordan Casey but he left his shooting boots at home.
.
The second half was only 2 minutes old when the Town increased the lead. Liam Quinn hesitated in clearing and in nipped Jack Harris to slide the ball home. Two minutes later Liam Quinn was adjudged to have fouled Harris in the box, the referee Phillip Rowley pointed to the spot and Wilson buried the kick into the net.
Changes were made for the Bay Steve Ita replaced Joe Nelder. Faversham also made changes bringing on Renford Tenyue and Dave Botterill for George Monger and Dean Grant. For the final 15 minutes Bay manager Sam Denly put on Sam Staunton and Elliot Cutts for Jordan Casey and Ben Brown. Herne Bay continued to press forward but to no avail and new signing Dan Parkinson received his marching orders for a second yellow card just before the final whistle.
