With a three-match losing streak looming over them, Herne Bay looked to turn things around in the Kent Senior Cup against Faversham Town on Tuesday evening.
The cup game also presented a chance for some youth players to get a good outing, and for some senior players to have a rest.
In the fourth minute, Herne Bay keeper Tom Benham made a good save to prevent an early goal.
Antonio Morgan ran through Faversham’s midfield after 12 minutes, but after laying the ball off to Rodney Eruotor, Eruotor's effort was saved by Faversham’s keeper.
Eruotor & Morgan would then be involved in the 28th minute when Eruotor was taken out on the edge of the box, and Antonio’s free kick went just wide of the post.
Then in the 36th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Faversham after a challenge by Lesley Duru was given as a foul.
Tom Benham would once again have a great moment when he guessed correctly and got down low and saved Kwayie’s penalty.
But a few minutes, Herne Bay went down the other end and Duru was taken down in the box, however the ref didn’t call it much to the displeasure of the Herne Bay faithful.
The halftime score was 0-0, and Lewis Gard was substituted for Cody Cosgrave in the break.
The second half would ultimately bring the results for The Bay.
Frank Craik and Rodney Eruotor were substituted for Kaiden Jeffrey and Toby Downs in the 62nd minute, with Downs assisting in less than 10 minutes of being on the pitch.
69 minutes in, Downs made a good run into the box, and looped a ball into Ryan Kingsford who was waiting in the centre, and slotted it home past the keeper with a cool finish in front of the home fans.
Then, as the clock was winding down to the end of the 90, Herne Bay doubled their lead through Alex Kokoshi.
In the 84th minute, after receiving the ball in Faversham’s half, Kokoshi dribbled past two defenders to take a shot from the D where it whizzed under the keeper into the bottom right of the net.
Celebrations erupted around the ground as The Bay supporters watched time run out, and after three minutes of added time, the ref blew his whistle to end the match.
The celebrations continued after full time, with Herne Bay having advanced into the second round, where they will face local rivals Margate at Hartsdown Park.
