John Bathurst writes ....

The Velocity Trophy Bostik League Cup 1st Round
Tonbridge Angels 10 (ten) - 1 Herne Bay.

Herne Bay: Ben Hunter, Jai McKinlay Nassim Dukali, Jack Steventon, Jono Richardson, Josh Wisson, Connor Wilkins Tom Carlton, Jake Embery, Jarred Trespaderne, Ryan Catmull
Subs Used: Bradley Schafer (Wilkins 30) Danny Rumbol (McKinlay 46) Alex Mulrooney-Skinner (Trespaderne 46)
Subs not used: Raphe Brown, Jardel Bunda-Kamara

Herne Bay’s youngsters were put to the sword by a ruthless Tonbridge Angels, who gave their manager a very positive response to their shocking performance against Faversham Town in the 1st Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.
With both sides fielding changed teams from the weekend, it was the home side who had a point to prove to their supporters and their manager. It was pretty much all one way traffic and Herne Bay were fortunate to be only five goals down at the break. Angels missed a number of glaring opportunities. Alex Akrofi blazed over the bar or wide of the target at least four times. The pace of Akrofi, and the skill of Dan Thompson, were causing problems to the Bay defence and the normally reliable Ben Hunter in goal.
Goals came for Thompson in the 25th and 42nd minutes, A Beere penalty in the 32nd
minute , when Jono brought down Akrofi, George Beavan in the 34th minute and Akrofi in the 43rd minute. It was significant that all the scorers were finding the net for the first time this season!
If Herne Bay hoped that the Angels might let up in the second half they were to be very
disappointed. The goals kept on coming with strikes from Akrofi 50 minutes, Substitutes, Joe Turner 70 minutes, Nathan Elder 75 minutes and a brace from Andre McCollin on 81 and 90 minutes.
Herne Bay certainly showed more enterprise going forward during the second half and did
manage to score in the 78th minute through Tom Carlton but it was simply just the smallest of consolations. The problem for the Bay was that every time the Angels went forward they looked as if they were would score and when you are able to substitute attack minded players with the likes of Elder, Turner and McCollin then life gets very difficult for tiring defenders.
Herne Bay will not play this badly again, at least we hope not, but the quality and venom of the shots on target were tremendous. There was no ‘pussyfooting’ around when their forwards were in sight of goal; the shots ranged in and hit the back of the net with considerable force.
Best player on the field was Alex Akrofi with his tremendous pace and alertness he was a
constant pain in the side for Jono all evening. Classiest player, Angels captain Ex Billericay, George Beavon. What a defender.
Bay must forget this game very quickly; move on with the league and FA Cup fixtures, and return to winning ways to bring the confidence back.
