Herne Bay through to the last four of the Kent Cup

Mark Kidd

A devastating first half display put the tie beyond the reach of a decent Ebbsfleet side

Herne Bay put in a fine performance netting five times in the first half and secured their place in the last four of the Kent Cup. They faced a credible challenge in Ebbsfleet who have posted some decent results of late, but they were swept away but the power of the front line, the pace and skill of the midfield and a resolute back line.

Ebbsfleet started confidently and had some quality on display in midfield and a lively forward. To compound the difficult start for the home side, they lost their centre midfield talisman Joe Kennett after a heavy challenge who limp off in some distress, evidently damaging tendons in his knee. On came Matt McHugh to replace him with just 5 minutes gone. Matt was instrumental in asking more questions of the visitors and it was he who opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a long range effort that found the corner of the net. Herne Bay then continued to turn the screw and took control of the game doubling their lead after a O'Brien corner was met by a fierce volley from Bishenden rifling the ball into the top of the net from close range.

Shortly after this Herne Bay had another injury in the same position - McHugh who had just come on injured his groin and limped off to be replaced by Aaron Knight, the third player in that important midfield position in 20 minutes of play.

Next game three in a row from John Rich whose pace and power was starting to trouble the visitor's tiring back line. The third was set up by Aaron Knight who was controlling the tempo and running the game from the middle of the park.

Herne Bay started the second half as they finished the first with Steve O'Brien getting a deserved goal minutes after the restart. They were cruising into the semi-finals and decided to make a few changes allowing more players more game time after numerous cancelled matches. That allowed Ebbsfleet a couple of consolation goals but the result was never in doubt.

Herne Bay meet Aylesford away in the semi finals on 22 February.
