The boys travelled to Deal, a team we had faced in pre-season and who are unbeaten this season.
Due to injuries and holidays, we were down to the bare bones with just 11 players, and Ciaran from the U16s stepping up to help out.
The boys started brightly, with Jack O coming close early on. A few minutes later, Juliani burst through on goal and lifted the ball over the keeper, but his effort struck the inside of the post and bounced straight back into the keeper’s hands.
Dontae then gave us the lead, showing great composure in the box to beat his man and calmly steer the ball home. 0–1.
Straight from the kick off, Deal equalised after a mix-up between Will and Charlie allowing their striker to nip in and slot the ball into the net. 1–1.
We had a strong shout for handball midway through the first half after a Deal defender appeared to push the ball over the bar volleyball style from a corner, but the referee waved play on.
Around the 30-minute mark, Jack O went close again, his shot from the edge of the box drifting just wide. Deal were then awarded a free kick right on the edge of our box, but Will saved well. Moments later, he was called into action again, reacting sharply to stop a close range effort as Deal began to grow into the game
Ten minutes before half-time, Dontae limped off with a recurring injury, leaving us with 10 men. A real loss as he had been pulling the strings in the middle.
Just before the break, Deal took the lead with a ball over the top, the striker looked offside, but the flag stayed down and he went through to score. 2–1 at half-time.
Despite being a man down, the boys came out in the second half with real intensity and fought for every ball. Ciaran, who had slotted in really well through the middle, created our best chance of the half battling hard in the box before finding Jack, whose shot rattled the side netting.
Late on, we were harshly penalised when the referee gave a free kick the wrong way, much to the team’s frustration. Sam saw yellow for dissent and was sin binned.
Full time: Deal 2–1
The boys will be disappointed not to come away with something, but there were plenty of positives to take. Playing most of the game with 10 men and no subs, they limited Deal to very few chances and showed great character throughout.
With a full squad available, the result could have been very different.
