It was like going in a time warp, going back three months. I wouldn’t say that I am angry, I’m gutted for the boys, because we got ourselves in a great position and then shot ourselves in the foot, big time. The basics went out of the window, we could not even control the ball out there, it was poor all round.
I thought Big G was tremendous today, which showed why we showed faith in him, having signed him. He had a few early games where he made a few mistakes, but he showed his ability today and his strength of character. Numbers two to 14 did not turn up, and I include every single player in that, nowhere near good enough, the real basics just couldn’t be done, really disappointing. But looking at it from a different perspective of just one game, we’ve been exceeding expectations and today gives everyone a sense of reality. This league is difficult, if you don’t turn up and you have that many players under-performing, you’re not going to get a result.
You’ve got to give them a lot of credit, especially off the back of a 0-7 loss. I knew before the game it was one of the toughest games we could have had this week, they were going to give a reaction. They prepared as best as they could to make sure a 0-7 did not happen again. Some people expected us to go out and thump them, but so many times in football you see that is not the case.
Obviously, their goal, I would like us to score crosses like that, you can’t plan for that, you can’t do a lot about it. On his left foot, on the left wing, miles out wide, smashed it across and its flown in off the post. That’s when you think that it is not going to be our day. We had no quality about us in the second half, our decision making was absolutely horrendous, and it was schoolboy stuff. So disappointing, yes, but we move on. I appreciate the fact that at 0-1 down the supporters were singing, trying to get behind the boys, and that hasn’t happened in my time here. The players get one joker card and today was it. They have been outstanding recently, so we don’t dwell on it, we move forward. All of the positives that we have been talking about recently are still available to us. We are in a much better position than we may well have hoped for at this stage of the season when all of this started.
We are all gutted today, and we will need to bounce back at Chichester. We go down there on Tuesday night; we are probably underdogs now, especially considering where they got to in the FA Cup. We need to go down there and regroup quickly, which I know that the lads are desperate to do.
