U14s Match Report

Herne Bay U14’s travelled to Grove Park near Sidcup for the 1st round of the county cup against Carpe Diem. On the back of great result against Welling in the League cup the previous week Bay looked to continue the good form and a place in the 2nd round of the county Cup.

Bay started well keeping possession and soon created chances with Devon Mason and Matas Kabelis both going close. Carpe Diem looked to close Bay down putting the Bay players under pressure. Carpe Diem took the lead when a hopeful ball over the top of the Bay defence allowed their striker to guide the ball past Jacob Webb in the Bay goal for a 1 - 0 lead. Undeterred Bay continued to pass the ball without really creating any real clear cut chances and with Carpe Diem sticking to the high pressure game Bay struggled to get into a rhythm and when a strike from the edge of the box beat Jacob Webb, Carpe Diem headed into half time with a 2 - 0 lead.

Bay knew they could play and perform better but started the second half much the same as they ended the first with Diem taking an early strike that found its way into the corner for a 3 - 0 lead for Carpe Diem.

With Bay looking at leaving the County Cup at the first hurdle having played the better football but not creating the chances they deserved Devon Mason beat the left back to float a great cross into the box for James Williams to head home for 3 - 1. The boys sensed that they could get something from the game and with Alfie Wood starting to pull the strings and 15 minutes to go Bay pulled another one back when Devon Mason fired a shot into the far corner for 3 - 2.

As the pressure began to build on Carpe Diem, Bay started creating chances and pushed Carpe Diem back into their own half and soon racked up a few corner kicks. Diem cleared a corner to the edge of the Box where Anthony Simes collected the ball turned and struck a fierce drive that gave the keeper no chance, 3 -3.

There was only going to be one winner. Joesph Crowley intercepted a bad clearance from the Diem keeper 40 yards from goal and hit the volley back towards the goal only for the keeper to make his way across the goal and to push the ball out of a corner. Moments later Joesph Crowley hit what proved to be the winner from distance with Diem keeper getting no where near it for 3 - 4 to Herne Bay and moments later the referee calling the game to an end.

Having played the best football and leaving it late the Under 14’s really dug themselves out of a hole today to move into the next round.

Herne Bay face Ashford this coming Sunday morning at Herne Bay High School as they get back to league action.
