Herne Bay made it back to back league wins with this gritty win over a Crawley Wasps Development Squad side rooted to the bottom of the table, writes Peter Guise. In truth, Crawley looked anything but a basement team, playing controlled football at times as they carved their way toward the Bay goal. In fact, Wasps led twice. The first goal coming with just four minutes on the clock. Bay struck back when skipper Kate Foster went over in the box and got up to strike the equaliser from the spot off the underside of the crossbar. Again Crawley fought back to take the lead again but with two minutes to go before the break, a cleverly crafted move was finished off by Sophie Gifford sweeping home.

After the interval, Bay were more dominant, they had gone into the game without their recognised ‘keeper. The duties were shared between Chiara Mesquita and Chloe Woolaway, with both performing well. Nine minutes into the second period, the marauding Foster was again upended in the penalty area and this time her penalty kick was struck with venom into the top right hand corner. Sophie Gifford wrapped things up with thirteen minutes to go with her second of the game, a scuffed shot that bobbled out of reach of the diving Franchi in the Wasps’ goal. Bay even survived two scares when their upright was rattled but sometimes an ugly three points is better than none.

“Back to back wins on the road and eight goals scored can’t be bad”, said manager Peter Whittaker, “this match was a bit of a grind with many players not on top form and we were not at our best but credit to the team who kept going and never gave up. Football can be like that sometimes but the three points was what we desired after a tough start to the campaign; we will take it. Massive credit to Chiara and Chloe for donning the gloves, they never let us down”.
