Steve Barton writes ...

Up until then the play had been turgid with the only chance of note when Witham keeper George Marsh saved well from Ryan King-Elliott. Unfortunately for the Witham stopper this was to be one of his only moments of glory. There followed a few Essex moments and Charlie Barlow and T. Rialist (no.8) were lucky to stay on the pitch, particularly Barlow, as it seems that throwing a punch does not count in pre-season; no wonder they are no longer called friendlies.

The inevitable changes were made at the break and afterwards, and it was Jamie Guy, the ex-Colchester United and many others striker, who hooked the ball over his shoulder past a stunned Jack Delo. After taking the lead Witham smelled blood and strove forward, but at the same time Bay upped their game.

The equaliser came on 79 when Bola Dawodu slotted home. Herne Bay were on the ascendency and in the 83rdminute Zac Ansah and new signing Jordan Johnson-Palmer combined well, and Johnson-Palmer scored a stunner from distance. With the clock ticking down Marsh hesitated with the ball at his feet, was challenged by Ansah and the ball fell to Kyron Lightfoot who completed the scoring.

Up to this point Witham had been unbeaten in pre-season but were sent home with plenty to think about. Ben Smith still has irons in the fire, despite recent departures, and with the new Stadium Sponsorship deal announced there are plenty of positives for the Herne Bay supporters.

Squad included: Jack Delo, Michael Turner, Malachi Robinson, Joe Kennett, Gary Sayer, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Ryan King-Elliott, Dan Lawrence, Zak Ansah, Ricky Freeman, Luke Griffiths, Joe Nelder, Bola Dawodu, Kyron Lightfoot, Victor Aiyelabola, Luke Addy.
