Hassan at the double as the Bay pick up first win of the season.

Herne Bay were in goalscoring form on Tuesday evening as they secured their first win of the Isthmian League Premier Division season, beating Haringey Borough 4-2.

Goals from Hassan Jalloh and Marcel Barrington saw Ben Smith’s side race away to an early two-goal lead at The CVS Van Hire Stadium.

However, the hosts wiped out that advantage, with efforts either side of the half-time break from Anthony Mendy and Rakim Richards drawing Haringey level.

Helge Orome turned the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box midway through the second period to restore the visitors lead.

And Jalloh put the finishing touches on an impressive team performance towards the end of play, blasting his second, and the Bay’s fourth, past home ‘keeper Luke Mewitt.

The men in blue were looking to put Sunday’s narrow defeat behind them and after only six minutes, they almost forced their way in front.

A powerful run down the right-hand side by Barrington allowed the forward time to cross the ball into the box, with KC lurking in a dangerous position at the back post. However, despite getting his head to the ball, his effort looped over the crossbar and landed into the roof of the net.

Ben Smith’s side were eager to assert themselves on the game right away and with just nine minutes on the clock, great vision from Orome saw Kymani Thomas played clean through on goal. Unfortunately, the home ‘keeper was alert to the threat, rushing off his line to block the shot.

It looked as though a goal was just around the corner and only 90 seconds later, the visitors got what they deserved. Picking up the ball in space on the angle, Jalloh drove his shot into the bottom corner of the Borough net, sending the travelling support into raptures.

They didn’t have to wait much longer for an opportunity to celebrate once again, with the Bay being awarded a penalty following a foul on KC. Stepping up to take it, Barrington picked out the bottom right corner perfectly, beating Mewitt who had guessed the right way.

Haringey were struggling to get a foothold in the game, with the reflexes of their shot-stopper prevented the men in blue from adding a third. Chris Edwards’ free kick looked as though it was going to be flicked home by Thomas, but Mewitt spread himself well to somehow keep the ball out.

The possibility of going three goals down seemed to awaken our hosts, who had an effort of their own two minutes later but on this occasion, it was Perrin who pulled off the impressive save, denying Mendy with his fingertips.

As the first half wore on, Borough seemed to be getting a feel for things and looked more dangerous on the front foot. However, excellent defending from Orome and Bode Anidugbe left them frustrated.

With ten minutes to go until half time, the Bay were continuing to press when in possession and following a dizzying run down the flank by KC, Jalloh looked set to bag another goal, but he drove his effort clear of the crossbar.

That let off seemed to galvanise Haringey and just before the break, they pulled a goal back. In a race between Mendy and Perrin to get to the loose ball, the home attacker just about got there first, touching the ball around the Bay ‘keeper before thumping the ball into the back of the net.

And it could have been all square with the very next attack as the home side looked to take advantage of the situation, but William Dupray’s powerful shot was not enough to beat Perrin, who pulled of a fantastic save.

Despite finishing the first half under the cosh, Ben Smith’s side came out for the second 45 with the intention of restoring their two-goal lead. In the 49th minute, Jalloh almost did just that, but his strike crashed against the frame of the goal.

Once again, Haringey seemed to benefit from the reprieve and with 54 minutes played, they found themselves level when Richards turned a dangerous free kick home from a few yards out.

However, their joy was short lived when less than ten minutes later, the men in blue edged their way ahead, this time through Orome who found himself in the perfect place to fire home after the hosts had struggled to clear a well-struck corner.

The Bay defence was looking impressive, which further frustrated Haringey, forcing them to try things they might else have not thought to. In the 74th minute, an audacious effort from just inside the Bay half cleared the crossbar, with Perrin more than confident the ball was always going over.

A one-goal lead is never secure and given their efforts in the second half, it seemed Ben Smith’s side were not settling for riding this score all the way to the finish. Thankfully, they didn’t have to do that when in the 83rd minute, Jalloh scored his second of the game, whipping the ball around the outstretched arm of Mewitt, who could do nothing to keep the ball out.

With very little time to overturn this score, the hosts began to get tetchy, with a very late challenge on KC from Samuel Owusu sparking off a melee. Once the dust had settled, the Haringey player was let off the hook by only receiving a yellow card when many in the crowd were expecting more.

There was one final chance for Haringey to reduce the arrears when a low cross skipped across the goalmouth, needing only for a yellow shirt to bundle it over the line.

But the ball proved to have too much power on it, escaping the attention of the Borough players as the referee brought the game to a close.
