“Where do I begin, to tell the story ….” since returning from this mauling of Medway based Anchorians, I’ve been humming this Andy Williams song from the acclaimed film, Love Story, writes Peter Guise.
Well, I guess the very first point to mention is that Anchorians played three players short and were always going to be up against it given those odds. But to their credit they kept plugging away. For their part, Bay rarely broke into third, let alone fourth, gear but were, nevertheless, ruthless in front of goal. No fewer than four players were chasing a hat-trick engraved presentation wine glass. None succeeded although it seems harsh to have to deny such an accolade to player of the match, Katie Reeves, whose unrestrained joy at bagging her first goals of the season were evident for all to see.
Abbie Duff got the ball rolling after just six minutes and from then until the final whistle sounded, seconds after Kate Foster's superb 19 yard free kick looped over the 'keeper to register Bay's eleventh of the afternoon, the destination of the points had never been in doubt. That last minute strike from the skipper allowed her to breathe a sigh of relief having seen her first half spot kick saved.
An immediate return to the Premier Division as Division One (East) champions is now within touching distance.
"We did a professional job today and there were some smart combinations and finishes", said manager Peter Whittaker, "and Katie Reeves, great slide finish for her first and in the right place for her second".
