Herne Bay Ladies booked their passage into the 2nd Round of the League Cup with an imposing first half display that saw them score three times in the opening thirty minutes to close the door on the advance of their premier division opponents. A brace from Lauren Harris took her tally for the season in all competitions to thirteen whilst Jemma Barton sealed the win with her strike on the half hour. In the absence of central defender Kerry Grant, the manager rejigged his formation with Saraya Phillips and Megan Pearce combining at the back to form a solid central defensive partnership. It was a pairing that would be tested many times in the second period as Newhaven went up a gear in an attempt to get back into the game. It passed the test. So much so that Sarah Cooper had little to do as a consequence although when called upon the Bay 'keeper proved more than equal to the task, racing out to clear one breakthrough and comfortably holding a net bound shot from distance high above her head.
"It was a good all round performance today and the three finishes were top draw", said manager Peter Whittaker, "credit to Newhaven for raising their game in the second half, it made us respond defensively and show we have that in our game as well. Another clean sheet for Sarah was reward for her 'keeping, the reliable back four, the battlers in midfield and the pressing forwards. It was a real team effort".
