Herne Bay Ladies pulled off an important and momentous league victory on the road against Corinthians that puts them into third place in the table and lays down a marker for when these two clash again in the Kent FA Women’s Cup Final on 1st April at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium.
The first half saw Bay play some lovely football with Danni Farmer, Emma Brown, Alex Roy and new signing Harriet Woolston all having chances to score, however decision making at times was not at its best in the final third. The breakthrough came from Emma Brown who outpaced the left back and shot across the goalkeeper in to the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead. It was a lead that was pegged back in the 25th minute when a ball over the top was hammered home for the equaliser.
After the break, Bay seemed slow out of the blocks and were forced back with their normal passing game being smothered by a rampant Corinthians. Then the opportunity of the game came in the 75th minute as a mistake from the Corinthians goalkeeper and centre back left Danni Farmer with an empty net to aim for and from 25 yards she struck the ball sweetly to give Bay an unlikely lead on the balance of play. From then on Corinthians piled forward searching for the second equaliser and Bay found it difficult to get out of their own half. The home side forced corner after corner but failed to convert their possession into a goal and the woodwork came to the visitors’ rescue on three occasions. With seconds to go Corinthians had one last chance which sailed over the cross bar and the resulting goal kick was the last kick of the game.
Herne Bay Ladies manager, Anthony Deer, said, “We knew it was going to be a tough match today, they’ve had some decent results this season. We had a good first half but we must learn to start the second half better. This sets up the Cup Final very nicely, it will be down to who wants it most on the day”.
