• Ten more victories and Herne Bay will be at Wembley.
The first Horsham Football Club was founded in 1871. The club eventually became members of the Sussex County League after
winning the West Sussex Senior League for the fourth time in 1925/26. After a six-year spell in the Corinthian League they entered
the Athenian League Division One in 1963/64. Herne Bay joined the Athenian League Division Two in 1964/65 and two seasons
later were joined by Horsham who had been relegated from Division One. They met for four campaigns, Bay winning once and
drawing once, with the Hornets victorious on six occasions and in 1969/70 Horsham were champions and gained promotion to
Division One. In 1970/71, it was Herne Bay’s turn to win the League and there were four encounters in Division One, ending in one
Bay win, one a draw and two defeats. 1972/73 saw Horsham top the table and move to the Isthmian League, whilst Bay’s last
season in the Athenian was a year later, and they joined the Kent League for 1974/75.
After various league re-organisations Horsham found themselves in the top tier of the Isthmian after finishing second in Division
One, to Ramsgate in 2005/06. Horsham moved out of Queen Street, their home of more than 100 years, in 2008 and after playing
home matches down at Worthing for a year they began ground sharing with neighbours Horsham YMCA at the start of the 2009/10
season.
They were relegated from the Isthmian Premier in 2011/12 and three years later there was a further drop after ending rock bottom
and 12 points from safety in the Isthmian Division One South. There was an immediate return as they were crowned champions of
the Southern Combination First Division.
Ba have come out on top in the eight Isthmian League encounters, winning five, drawing one and losing two. Last season
Horsham won 1-0 at a foggy Winch’s Field in December 2016 and three months later Ian Pulman scored a brace in the 2-0 win at
Goring’s Mead.
The two sides have met three times before in the FA Cup. In the 1989/90 season Herne Bay won 3-1 at home in the FA Cup
Preliminary Round. There was more success for the Bay four years later at the same stage of the same competition, this time
away, 2-1. And it was three in a row in 1996/97 this time in the Second Qualifying Round at Winch’s Field 1-0.
Herne Bay have twice reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, losing 1-0 to Margate in 1970/71 and 4-0 to
Farnborough Town in 1986/87. The last two seasons have seen Bay drop out at this stage, both times losing in replays (Hastings
United 2015/16 and Hemel Hempstead Town 2016/17). In 2007/08 an 85th
minute penalty earned Horsham, managed by ex-Bay
keeper John Maggs, a Second Round FA Cup replay at League One side Swansea before losing 6-2. Last campaign Horsham
were sent out of the cup in the Preliminary Round, 4-2 by South East Counties League Sevenoaks Town.
Whilst Herne Bay were beating Chessington & Hook United and Walton Casuals in this seasons competition, Horsham were
knocking out Combined Counties Premier Division Chertsey Town 3-1 in the Preliminary Round and followed that up with a 6-0
thumping of Ashford United in the First Qualifying Round.
The Hornets have started their league campaign with two wins (Shoreham H 3-0, Guernsey H 2-1), three defeats (Molesey A 1-2,
Thamesmead Town A 0-5, Chipstead H 1-2) and one draw (Walton Casuals A 1-1). They sit in 16th
position, 6 places and 2 points
behind Herne Bay who have a game in hand. Their average home attendance this time out is 192.
Joint leading goals corers are Darren Boswell, Toby House and Rob O’Toole who have netted three league and cup goals apiece,
whilst for Herne Bay Nassim Dukali has 4 (including one penalty), and Alex Mulrooney-Skinner, Jake Embery and Kingsley Aikhionbare all have three each.
This season Horsham will be playing their matches at Culver Road, Lancing whilst they await the building of their own ground at
Hop Oast.
Eight Bostik South clubs remain in the FA Cup. Only three are in the top half of the table, Carshalton Athletic 5th, Phoenix Sports 8th
and Herne Bay 10th with the other five in the bottom half, Thamesmead 13th Horsham 16th Faversham 18th Chipstead 19th and Ramsgate 22nd in the league. Five out of eight are from Kent, two from Surrey and one from Sussex.
Third Qualifying Round fixtures are due to be played on Saturday 30th September 2017.
The 80 winning teams from the Second
Qualifying Round will take part in this stage of the competition;
no additional teams will enter at this stage. The 24 members of the
National League enter at the Fourth Qualifying Round stage.
