RYMAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
DIVISION ONE SOUTH
HERNE BAY 1-3 CORINTHIAN CASUALS
Thursday 18th April 2013
In front of the lowest crowd of the season Herne Bay threw away a golden
opportunity to take three points when wholesale changes were made to the starting line up, leaving our two leading goal scorers and the two central defenders to sit on the bench in a game we all wanted to win to ensure we finished on a respectable 46 points and above our near neighbours, Whitstable Town in our first season in the Ryman.
The wholesale changes led to a team who looked as if they had just met, with passes going astray, no communication and it made the visitors, Corinthian Casuals look very good.
The visitors took the lead as early as the 12th minute when midfielder, Ross Defoe was allowed space and time to weave a path across the 18 yard line before smashing a left foot volley past a helpless Luke Prentice. Bay chased and harried but this was all they did. The ball control was non existant. Only in the dying minutes of the first half did we manage to get back into the game.
Following a corner the ball bounced around in the area. Joe Nelder headed the ball over the line but the officials didn’t award the goal before Gary Sayer made certain by smashing home.
In the space of three minutes in twelve minutes into the second period Casuals increased the lead with two stunning goals. The first was taken straight from the training ground. From a free kick just outside the area the Jason Thurley looked like he was going to hit the ball over the wall. Instead a slide rule pass found Tom Williams unmarked 6 yards out and he slotted the ball past Prentice.
The second was even better; a stunning volley from 25 yards in to the top corner by Steve Barilli.
This prompted a double substitution, with Byron Walker and James Turner replacing Tunji Agbajae and Michael Turner. Followed by Calum McGeehan replacing Sam Taylor. Bay started to press but still failed to threaten keeper. Danny Bracken. Then with 5 minutes left of normal time Bay were thrown a lifeline when Walker was brought down. Up stepped Calum but unfortunately his low shot was well saved by Bracken. A very disappointing result one which left the fans shocked at why this game was chosen to make wholesale changes.
