Match Report by Ray Kelly
With Mersthams 3-0 victory at Winch's Field, Herne Bay have now lost the last four games on the trot, scored one goal, in the Ryman League seeing the bay move down to 15th place.
Merstham, with their industrious display, were well worth the 3-0 scoreline that left Herne Bay lacking confidence and only managing 3 or 4 shots on goal during the whole game.
Calum McGeehan and Dan Eason were the only two players to shine in this performance that left Bay fans very despondent!
Herne Bay started the game well enough, matching Mersham's industry and after only 5 minutes, after a good run by Rhys Lawson, James Turner's shot was cleared off the line by Mersham's Dean Gunner and a minute later, Byron Walker set up Lawson only to see his effort cleared for a corner by Rob Carter.
Mersham started to get the upper hand with Jack McLeod and Luke L'Anson constantly attacking down Bay's right flank but Bay team can thank McGeehan for cutting out crosses following the numerous Mersham attacks.
After a foul on James Turner in the 29th minute the game boiled over with the majority of players getting involved. Referee Michael Hayden ended up booking James Turner and Josh Sargeant.
When the game restarted Mersham started to apply pressure on the Home defence and it came as no surprise in the 36th minute when they took the lead. Mark Nwokji played a defence splitting ball through to L'Anson who crashed the ball past Eason from close range.
Three minutes later Merstham should have doubled the lead when Liam Wright walzed through the defence only to fluff his shot straight into Eason's arms.
From the start of the 2nd period Herne Bay tried to get back in the game. In the first 15 minutes Bay were awarded three free kicks on the edge of the visitors penalty area but all of these were not converted with Josh Sargeant and Tom Bryant shooting high over the bar.
On 70 minutes Walker gave Bay some hope but his snap shot was well saved by Lloyd Anderson in the Mersham goal and a minute later, Billy Bennett fired over from 10 yards.
Then distaster for Bay; when James Turner was sent off for a second yellow card after a tackle. Two minutes later Eason came to Bay's rescue, saving at the feet of Wright and repeating a minute later at the feet of L'Anson, Joe Nelder was replaced by Tunji Agbajae and Lawson with Dean Grant.
Merstham exploited the space left by the removal of Nelder and doubled the lead when Mcleod crossed to find Wright in acres of space to tap to in past Eason. In the 82nd minute Herne Bay won a corner, From Grant' s corner the ball was cleared up field for McLeod to run through Bay's defence before squaring to L'Anson who crashed the ball into the back of the net to give Merstham a deserved 3-0 victory.
