Bay stutter to another home defeat

Report by Ray Kelly

Herne Bay stuttered to another home defeat,on a very heavy Winch's Field. Local rivals Faversham Town were the victors by a 3-0 scoreline. To make maters worse Faversham fielded five of last seasons Bay side; Jamie Maxted, Dan Lawrence, Toby Ashmore, Darren Marsden and Luke Harvey and Luke ending the star man with two well taken goals just
to rub salt in the wounds.

Faversham were quick out of the blocks and were ahead after only 2 minutes when the useful Kieran Oliver smashed in from close range after Dan Lawrence put in a venomous low cross. Bay Captain, James Campbell, was injured while trying to prevent Lawrence's cross and was forced to leave the game. Steven Lloyd replaced him at centre back.

Within two minutes Harvey should have doubled the lead after racing through the defence but his shot was well saved by Dan Eason.

Herne Bay pushed forward looking for an equaliser and on 12 minute's Calum McGeehan had the ball in the net only for Referee Oliver Jackson to rule it out for hand ball.

With Bay pushing forward, Faversham took advantage and broke out fast. Then in the 20th minute a long ball out of defence found Harvey and Lloyd chasing the ball down the right flank.

Harvey appeared to trip Lloyd, but the referee allowed play to continue and Harvey powered through before slamming the ball past Eason. 2-0 to Faversham.

Herne Bay showed signs of getting back into the game and on the half hour, Rhys Lawson went on a mazey run down the left but his resulting shot was well saved by Overland and a few minutes later he pushed Sam Bewick's snap shot round the post.

Just before half time Byron Walker was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Gary Sayer's free kick was met by Billy Bennett but his header was off target.

Herne Bay started a little better in the second half and on 50 minutes. Bennett missed a great chance to pull a goal back when he mis-kicked in front of goal. A minute later Bewick was brought down on the edge of the box but McGeehan's kick slammed into the wall.

Faversham were content to soak up the pressure and then hit back on the counter. In the 61st minute Sayer was adjudged to have handled just outside the box but Marsden's kick was well saved by Eason.

Eason again saved superbly from a shot from Lawrence five minutes later.

Further chances fell to Marsden and Oliver but were snuffed out by Lloyd and McGeehan.

Changes were made by both teams in the 71st minute with Jordan Agbajae coming on for Dan Wisker for the Bay and Wayne Wilson for Marsden and James Peacock for Oliver for the Town.

Harvey wrapped up the game when he raced through a static Bay defence and slammed the ball past Eason.

The 3-0 scoreline was a fair result but Herne Bay showed more spirit than they had over recent weeks with the front men looking more lively.
