Never has the old 'Cliche' 'A game of two halves been so true with Herne Bay’s 2-1 victory over Horsham.
Horsham totally dominated the first 45 minutes, chasing Bay’s players all over the pitch, closing them down and never giving them any time on the ball. This worked very well but we all know the pitch at Winch’s Field is very big, and after some heavy rain it saps the energy and this proved to be Horsham’s downfall as Bay had much more space and time in the second period as Horsham struggled with the pace of Bay’s play.
The writing was on the wall as early as the 5th minute when Horsham’s Ryan Marriott unleashed a shot that deflected off Calum McGeehan’s shin, looping towards the goal, forcing Dan Eason to somehow tip the ball over the bar.
Horsham continued to press but Steven Lloyd and McGeehan, as they have shown over recent games, are very resolute in the heart of the defence.
On 16 minutes Horsham's Billy Medlock burst through but fortunately he fired straight at Eason. Bay’s attacks were limited to the occasional breakaway and from one of these Rhys Lawson put Danny Williams through; Williams chipped the ball over Horsham’s keeper, Michael Hunter, as he came out to close the angle but the ball went agonisingly wide of the target.
Further chances fell to Horsham's Eddie Kobdah and Gary Charman but they just couldn't get the ball past Eason. Bay would consider themselves very fortunate to go in at half time on level terms.
Herne Bay started the second half in a much better frame of mind and could have easily taken the lead inside the five minutes of the restart. Lawson was played in by James Turner but he blasted into the side netting from an acute angle.
Horsham were forced to make an early substitution following an injury to Charman. His replacement, Evan Archibald had an immediate impact. Eason could only parry his fierce drive into the feet of Marriott who tapped the ball home from close range.
Bay’s response was to bring on Josh Sergeant, who replaced Michael Turner. The goal giving them the impetus to push forward and take the game to the visitors and It took only three minutes to get back on level terms. A fabulous move, starting from a Turner cross from the right hand side corner, which flew past everyone, was picked up by Williams. He passes back to Gary Sayer who passes to Dan Wisker in the centre. Wisker moves the ball out Tom Bryant who takes a couple of touches before slotting it into the feet of Lawson in the box. Lawson shrugs off the challenge from defender, James Brockhurst, and smashes the ball into the roof of the net. A really good goal.
Bay replaced Williams with Dean Grant and this paid dividends as he outpaced the defence and lashed the ball past Hunter to give Bay the lead. Joe Nelder was brought on to bolster Bay’s defence as the visitors pressed for the equalizer but Bay held out to take the points and move up into 2nd place in the table.
