"It's a while since we've had a clean sheet, we looked more assured today and I think we were excellent", said Herne Bay manager Sam Denly, "we won't get carried away, we know where we are in the league, we're happy with today and we'll try and move on with it".
Herne Bay hauled themselves out of the bottom three with this win at Winch's and put recent disappointing results behind them thanks to three goals in just nine second half minutes. Despite the loss of Liam Quinn to a second yellow card toward the end, Bay remained resolute to pick up a valuable three points.
Ray Kelly writes: Three goals and a clean sheet is just what the doctor ordered for Manager Sam Denly at Winch’s Field. Herne Bay hosted Chipstead and a powerful second half display ensured all three points. The only downer for the Bay was the two yellow cards shown to Liam Quinn, late in the second half.
Herne Bay made a nervy start to the game but soon settled down to play some good football. From the start long throw ons from Connor Sanders unsettled the ‘Chips’ defence who were often in a tangle and a big boot out of defence by Jordan Martin seemed to be their only answer. Chances were at a premium during the first half and the Bay’s first chance fell in the 20th.minute when a good solo run down the left by Danny Williams resulted in his shot grazing the far post with the ‘Chips’ goalkeeper Shiekh Cessay well beaten.
The Herne Bay defence had to be on their toes with Erivaldo Felis and Robert Hastings linking up well for ‘Chips’and putting pressure on the Bay defence but they remained resolute until the Referee Mr.Leigh Crowhurst blew for half time.
Herne Bay started the second half well on top and on 50 minutes they took the lead when Michael Turner played in Joe Nelder who thumped the ball in, giving Cessay no chance. Within 4 minutes the Bay were 2-0 up following a Danny Walder corner that was headed out by Dan Aldous, the ball was picked up by Adam Woolcott 25 yards out and let rip with a thunderbolt of a shot that flew into the top right hand corner. On 58 minutes the Chipstead side made a change in a bid to shore up the defence, bringing on Josh fuller for
Erivaldo Felis but to no avail as Mark Lovell went on a solo run through the ‘Chips’ defence before slotting in goal number three and making the game safe for Herne bay.
On 65 minutes disaster struck for Herne Bay when Liam Quinn picked up a second yellow card from the Referee and was sent for an early bath, this was Liam’s first game back for 2 month’s, harsh if i may add. Herne Bay played out the the remainder of the game with no alarms.
This was a well deserved win for the Bay and it was pleasing to see a near full strength side taking the field.
"There were some really good performances today, right across the park we were better, it was a stronger professional performance", said Sam Denly.
