Sam Hasler’s free kicks were too much for basement Chipstead. He scored from one and then with another set up Bay’s third goal of the afternoon.

“We all know that at set pieces there’s not much better than him in the league, he’s got a wonder of a left foot”, said Herne Bay manager Sam Denly, “to be fair, Hasler’s been outstanding today, it’s been a good week for us”.

Ray Kelly writes, Although Herne Bay won this encounter against basement club Chipstead, they were made to dig in and fight at times before going on to dominate proceedings. A brace from Sam Hasler in the first half and a goal apiece for Connor Sanders and Joe Nelder in the second sealed this well earned victory.

Herne Bay started like a ‘train’ , with Sam Hasler scoring in the first minute after picking up the ball in mid-field ,he ran through the Chips defence before smashing the ball past Milan Stojsavljevic. Within 2 minutes Chipstead had a chance to get back on terms when Liam Quinn headed off the Bay goal line from a Bob Webbe volley. Herne Bay continued to press the Chipstead defence and on 15 minutes , following a Connor Sanders long throw, Elliot Cutts just ‘over cooked’ his shot ,flying over the bar. A minute later Sam Hasler shot wide after a good cross from Dan Johnson. Back came the Chips when Bentley Graham failed to get a contact on the ball in front of Jack Delo. Further half chances fell to Elliot Cutts and Mark lovell before Chipstead threatened the Herne Bay goal again in the 24th. minute when a 40 yard free kick from Bob Webbe was headed off the goal line by Liam Quinn. On 26 minutes Sam Hasler put the Bay 2-0 up with a free kick from 35 yards that screamed into the top right hand corner of the net with Milan grasping thin air. Two minutes later Chipstead pulled a goal back when Joel Aitkin had the simple task of tapping in on the goal line, this goal was hotly disputed for off side but to no avail. For the rest of the half Bay continued to press the Chips defence but found no way through .

Herne Bay were first on the attack in the second half and should have increased their lead on 48 minutes when Connor Sanders fired over after a good cross from Mark Lovell. A minute later it was Chipstead’s turn to miss a golden chance when Charlie Carter headed into the hands of Jack Delo from 6 yards after a good cross from Connor French. In the 50th minute Jack Delo produced a fantastic save to prevent Carter from levelling the scores when he came out to turn aside his shot at point blank range. On 57 minutes Sam Hasler almost had a hat trick only to see Milan Stojsavljevic turn his goal bound effort round the post.

In the 70th. minute Connor French wasted a good chance to level the game when he ran through the Bay defence only to fire well over with only Jack to beat. Herne Bay made the game safe in the 75th minute when a Sam Hasler corner found Liam Quinn who headed
on to Connor Sanders who thumped in from 10 yards. On 83 minutes Joe Nelder put Herne Bay 4-1 up after Chipstead failed to clear a corner and he rammed home a loose ball. In the final moments of the game Jack Delo pulled of another great save , tipping over a Connor French shot that looked goal bound.

Herne Bay made a good start to this game and went on to dominate the match but in saying this Chipstead ,who were fielding 5 new players , were up for the challenge .

“They may be bottom of the league but we had to do our job and be professional”, said Denly, “It was a complete performance, we played some good stuff. We’ve got games coming thick and fast, I don’t think we’ve got a midweek off for a while, the squad is going to be stretched and everyone will have to play their part. It’s a pretty hectic schedule”.
