Herne Bay took a strong squad to the Channel Islands and came back with a point after going down to ten men with 22 minutes to go.

“I thought we were excellent and dominated the first half”, said Herne Bay manager Sam Denly, “we had the better of the possession and created a few half chances but the sending off has killed us”.

Ray Kelly writes: Herne Bay travelled to Footes Lane Stadium , home of Guernsey F.C. ,on Wednesday night and became the first team this season to stop the ‘Green Lions’ scoring at home . Herne Bay deserved to get this point.

Sadly , once again Herne Bay finished the game with 10 men , having Sam Hasler sent off in the 70th. minute for a moment of stupidity. In front of a 630 crowd Herne Bay were more than a match for the Guernsey side in the first half. Both teams played an attacking game but chances were few and far between, with both defences being in top form.

On 7 minutes the ‘Green Lions’ Glyn Dyer tried a snap shot from 30 yards that flew over the bar and a minute later Ryan Zico-Black fired in a shot after a short corner but found Jack Delo in great form , gathering the ball with ease. Sam Hasler constantly probed down the left , linking up well with James Turner and Mark Lovell but they couldn’t get behind the Guernsey defence.

In the 20th. minute Jack Delo once again saved well from a long range shot from Dyer. A minute later Guernsey lost Centre Half Josh Steel due to an injury and he was replaced by Alex Le Prevost. Herne Bay started to get on top as the half wore on with Danny Walder, James Turner and Sam Hasler all going close but the ‘Green Lions’ defence stood firm.

Guernsey started the second half on the front foot and on 48 minutes Gary Sayer came to the Bays rescue by heading a goal bound shot from Dyer off the line. Sam Hasler then went on a good solo run but ran out of steam before Alex Le Prevost cleared his lines. On 60 minutes Bay Manager introduced Kane Phillip to the fray and withdrew Giorgio Russo. Kane’s speed started to bother the Guernsey defence and on 68 minutes he was unlucky not to score when his cross cum shot grazed the Guernsey cross bar.

Then came a moment of madness from Sam Hasler as he attempted to head but a Guernsey player in front of the Referee Mr. David Spain, he was shown a red card , justly deserved I am afraid.
This action could have cost the Bay dearly but for the heroics of the Herne Bay defence. Dan Parkinson then replaced Malk Lovell for the final 20 minutes.
In the 74th. minute Jack Delo was brought into action , making a great stop Goal Machine Ross Allen and this was followed by a fantastic goal line clearance from Michael Turner ,heading away a Zico-Black shot on the goal line. A minute later Gary Sayer did the same from a Craig Young effort. In the 87th minute Jacques Isabelle sent in a rasping shot that shaved the Herne Bay cross bar.
Then came the final three minutes that really earned the Bay a point with Jack Delo making two great saves and Gary Sayer once again heading of the line when a goal looked on for Guernsey. For the final minute Danny Spiller replaced a worn out James Turner.

This was a Great defensive performance from the whole of the Herne Bay squad, well done to them all.

“Away from home to Guernsey on a Wednesday night, that`s a fantastic result”, said Denly, “on another day we could have had all three. We showed a lot of resilience when we went down to ten men. It was a disappointing red card and could have ultimately cost the team. There were some superb performances tonight”.
