Herne Bay continued to rise up the Ryman League after a good 4-2 home win against Carshalton Athletic. For the first 60 minutes the Bay raced into a 4-0 lead, looking very sharp every time they attacked but after an inspired substitution on 62 minutes, Carshalton woke up and put the Bay defence under extreme pressure, pulling two goals back and leaving Herne Bay hanging on at the end.

The first half kicked off at a furious pace with Bay team swarming all over Athletic and were soon rewarded in the 4th minute when after some tricky work by Michael Turner resulted in a twice taken corner being headed in by Liam Quinn. In the following 2 minutes Herne Bay could have increased the lead when Dan Parkinson and Stuart King both missed good chances. Carshalton’s first chance came on 10 minutes when Tommy Bradford raced through the Bay defence only to see his effort saved by Jack Delo’s legs. This chance was soon followed by a Tony Sinclair header that sailed over the bar.

Herne bay increased the lead on 15 minutes when Danny Williams sped down the left before cutting in and shooting but the Carshalton keeper Jack Eden tipped the ball over for a Bay corner. Danny Walder picked out Sam Hasler who in turn slotted past Eden to put Herne Bay 2-0 up. Carshalton tried to get back into the game with Austin and Bradford both going close but they found Jack Delo in fine form.

Sam Hasler slung in a viscous low corner on 39 that ended up in the net via Athletic’s Ricardo Panton’s boot. The second half was only 2 minutes old when Herne Bay went further ahead when Sam Hasler finished off a great solo run with a sweet shot past Eden. On 59 minutes Carshalton pulled a goal back after Sean O’Toole crossed a good ball to Austin who nodded past Jack Delo.

On 65 minutes Carshalton made an inspired change, bringing on Jorden Clarke for Moraes, this seemed to be a master stroke for the Athletic side as they upped the game and forced Herne Bay back deep into their own half for long periods. Further chances fell to Miller and Bradford but they could not convert. In the 85th minute Carshalton pulled another goal back when Jorden Clarke sent in a thunder bolt of a shot from 30 yards that flew into the Bay’s net. Herne Bay saw out the remaining 5 minutes to claim all three points and relish the 7th place they are now in. another good display from Herne Bay with Manager Sam Denly well pleased.

“It’s natural to have a bit of panic”, said Denly, “that’s when you look to experienced players to put a foot on the ball and just settle things down. A little bit nervy in the last ten minutes but that happens in football, we’ll take the three points, it’s been a great performance again from the lads”.
