The proverbial game of two halves! “We were outstanding first half and played some outstanding football”, said Bay manager Sam Denly, “but you’ve got to play for 90 minutes and second half we were poor, there’s no real excuse for it.”

Two goals in the first 20 mnutes against Chipstead looked enough to keep the Winch’s Field tag “Fortress“ in tact but after the following 60 minutes of totally inept football that tag lay in ruins, going down 2-3.

From the kick off the Bay sprayed the ball around at pace and it was no surprise that after only 9 minutes Danny Williams put the Bay in front following a free kick from the half way line, Williams volleyed in from 6 yards. Within 10 minutes Bay went two up after Joe Nelder ran through from the half way line, evading several tackles before slotting past the advancing Chipstead keeper. Herne Bay should have gone three up in the 21st minute when Danny Williams chipped the ball on to the head of Dan Parkinson but he headed over from 6 yards. That miss was virtually the last chance the Bay side had in the rest of the game. From that moment on Chipstead started to force Herne Bay back into their own half with only the occasional counter attack led by Williams and Steven Ita

Chipstead started raiding down the left with Tasman Jorden causing all sorts of problems for the home defence and Derek Tieku running midfield and on 39 minutes Tieku pulled one back for the Chips after a superb cross from Jordan and a simple tap in past Jack Delo.

The second half started with the chips attacking at will with big Josh Gallagher and the influential captain Ben Dyett putting the Bay defence under pressure. On 65 minutes following a foul by Connor Sanders on the far right, Jack Buckle floated in a great free kick that found Dyett in acres of space, he slotted in past Delo with ease for the equaliser.

A minute later Chipstead made changes bringing on Will Turl for Dan Buckley and Dan Moody for Tasman Jordan. Herne Bay also brought on Ben Brown for Steven Ita. With 9 minutes left on the clock Josh Gallagher sped down the left wing before crossing to Will Turl who rammed the ball past Delo in the Bay goal.

At the final whistle many disgruntled fans had witnessed the worst second half display from a Herne Bay side for many seasons.

“I don’t know what happened second half”, said Denly, “I’m disappointed with the lads and I’ve told them that. The FA Trophy tie, next Saturday, probably comes at a good time after that result today. They’re good days out and we’ll be looking to get a result.”
