A superb free kick,13 minutes from time by Dan Parkinson secured all three points for Herne Bay against Ramsgate at ‘Fortress Winch’s Field’ (the 7th win out of 8 home games for the Bay).Make no mistake, this Kent Derby was a hard physical encounter but goal chances were at a premium with both goal keepers having a quiet night.
Right from the kick off the Bay surged forward but numerous times were brought to a shuddering halt by the hard tackling Rams defence. The referee, Mr Tom Ramsey, booked Ramsgate defender Dean Hill after only 5 minutes after a series of bad tackles. Herne Bay were well on top for the first 20 minutes with Stuart King and Danny Williams causing all sorts of problems for the Rams defence but no end result.
Ramsgate relied on the counter attack with the speedy pair of Scott Punton and Tom Chapman but they too couldn’t find the finishing power needed. The first shot on goal came in the 25th minute when Rams’ Warren Schulz let go from 25 yards only to see his effort sail over the bar. Five minutes later Scott Punton did the same.
On 42 minutes the injured Stuart King left the field and was replaced by Jordan Casey. A minute later, after some good work by Michael Turner, Casey headed over from 10 yards out. This turned out to be the Bay’s only chance in the first half.
The second half started the same way and on 50 minutes Danny Williams went on a mazy run before crossing to Casey but the Rams’ keeper Nick Shaw beat him to the ball. Hard tackles continued to fly in and on 54 minutes the referee booked Punton and Curtis Robinson. Ramsgate continued to look dangerous on the counter but Gary Sayer mopped up all threatening balls. In the 65th minute Steven Ita replaced James Brown to give the Bay more pace up front.
Then on 73 minutes Ramsgate fouled once too often and from the edge of their penalty box Dan Parkinson swerved a great kick around the Rams wall and the ball flew into the net. This goal brought Ramsgate to life and they started to blitz the Bay defence over the final 10 minutes but the defence stayed solid. On 85 minutes Ramsgate replaced Charlie Walsh and Josh Wooley for Ira Jackson and Mac Murray and the Bay put on Kane Butler for the hard working Danny Williams. When the final whistle went the Bay had moved up to 6th place in the League.
