Herne Bay's interest in this variously named cup competition was halted by Hastings after the tie went to sudden death penalties, having exhausted 90 minutes of which only 3 remained when the visitors equalised, no extra-time, and the five penalty shoot out. In fairness, Hastings had been knocking on the door for a quarter of an hour before they scored to cancel out Adam Woolcott's tenacious opener at the end of the first half.

Ray Kelly writes: Herne Bay fell at the first hurdle of the League Cup on Tuesday night against a strong Hastings side. 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes meant the dreaded penalties, the out come was a 4-3 on pen’s win for Hastings. For the first 60 minutes of this encounter Herne Bay were the dominant side , playing some very good football. From the kick off the Bay side dominated the proceedings with fast and cleaver football, constantly testing the Hastings defence. As early as the 5th. minute a good run cross from Sam Hallett tested the Hastings keeper Ryan Nicholls who just managed to scoop the ball off of Stuart Zanone’s foot. Further half chances fell to Danny Williams and Kane Phillip over the following 10 minutes and on 15 minutes a long throw from Joe Nelder found Kane Phillip but his header was well taken by Nicholls. Hastings were looking dangerous on the break with Harry Stannard and Frannie Colin testing the Bay’s defence but Joe Kennett and Kenny Sanders held the line well. On 27 minutes Herne Bay were nearly undone when Referee Mr. Ryan Whittaker awarded a free kick on the edge of the Bay’s area but a great stop by Jack Delo prevented Harry Stannard from netting. Herne Bay deservedly took the lead in the 41st. minute when after a goal mouth scramble the ball fell loose to
Adam Woolcott who hammered home from 10 yards.

Josh Wood replaced Joe Nelder at half time and a few minutes later James Turner came on for Danny Williams. Hastings also made changes with Steve Watt giving way to Liam Foster. Hastings started to impose themselves on the Bay and on 55 minutes Jack Harris should have restored parity when he fired over when well placed. Hastings started getting on top with Matt Bodkin going close twice and only a good save from Jack Delo preventing Harry Stannard from equalising in the 80th. minute.
On 87 minutes Hastings equalised when Sam Cruttwell surged down the left before crossing to find Frannie Colin who headed in from 10 yards.

With the final score at 1-1 penalties arrived and Hastings won the spoils 4-3. This was a very good performance from the Bay side who were missing several key players and it gave Sam a chance to blood some of the fringe players.
