Herne Bay overcame appalling weather to breeze through to the quarter finals of the Kent Reliance Kent FA Senior Cup with this comprehensive victory over fellow Ryman One South side, Chatham Town, and will face Conference South opposition in the shape of Dartford in the last eight.

Ray Kelly writes:

In a dour first half , both teams found it hard to get into any sort of rhythm , this was mainly due to the conditions ,very wet and slippery.
Chances were at a premium during the half with both teams breaking down when getting near the others penalty areas. Half chances fell to Ricky Gunday and Austen Edwards for the ‘Chats’ and Kane Phillips and Liam Quinn for the Bay. Just before the half time whistle and against the run of play, Kwabena Osei lashed in a shot from an acute angle that in all honesty should have been cleared, to put Chatham 1-0 up at half time.

During the break, Herne Bay Manager Sam Denly had a ‘little chat’ with his players and in the second half they were a different side. From the restart the bay swarmed all over Chatham pinning them back in their own half for long periods of time. On 48 minutes Danny Parkinson should have restored parity when he blazed wide with the goal at his mercy . Then came a series of changes with Chatham replacing Lewis Knight and Joe Loft for Cory Holder and Charles Ofusu-Hene and Sam Denly put on Connor Sanders and Danny Williams for Harry Brown and James Turner.

Straight away the bay took control of the game and on 59 minutes Herne Bay were level when a Danny Walder corner was headed in at the far post by Dan Johnson , a header that the Chatham Goalkeeper, Ryan Nicholls, failed to hold. Within 4 minutes the Bay had taken the lead when another Danny Walder corner was fumbled by the hapless Ryan Nicholls and the ball fell to Dan Parkinson who smashed the ball home.

Chatham tried to break out but they were restricted from shooting from distance with shots going well over the bar from Edwards and Osei. Herne Bay were bossing the game with new signing Lee Browning running midfield and Danny Williams running riot up front. It wasn’t long before Bay increased the lead when, in the 75th. minute, Danny Williams thumped in from the edge of the box , a shot that Nicholls could not hold. Danny Williams hit the bar in the 80th. minute and then came the goal of the match when a fine run by Kane
Phillip ended with him unselfishly squaring the ball to Danny Williams who crashed in from 6 yards.

After a dour first half Herne Bay took control of this match with debut boy Lee Browning oozing class and Danny Williams in great form. Well done lads.
