It was scrappy, but Herne Bay brushed Peacehaven aside with a power play performance in the final 9 minutes of this, up to that point, easily forgotten cup tie.

“We said at half time it wasn’t our best performance, we were One nil up, we were in the game and they weren’t really hurting us”, said Bay manager Sam Denly, “the key thing I said to them at half time was that good sides who are not quite playing well still find a way to win games and we’ve done that today”.

Ray Kelly’s reports:

Herne Bay went in front after only 6 minutes when the ‘Haven’ goalkeeper, Amadou Tangara, failed to
collect a Danny Walder corner and Mark lovell bundled the ball over the goal line. For the rest of the first half neither could master each other and the game turned into a scrappy affair with both goalkeepers untroubled. In saying that the Herne bay defence were as solid as a rock with Giorgio Russo ,Nathan Eastwood, Liam Quinn and Connor Sanders all on top form. On 37 minutes Herne Bay lost the dangerous looking Kane Butler, through injury, and he was replaced by Steven Ita. Chances were at a premium during the first half and only Peacehaven’s Lloyd Cotton went close to bothering Jack Delo after he headed over when well placed. Kane Phillip and Mark Lovell had there moments for the Bay but not enough to bother Tangara in the Haven goal.

Herne Bay started the second half with a little more ‘Gusto’ and within two minutes Mark Lovell played in Kane Phillip but his effort was easily saved by Tangara. On 55 minutes Steven Ita thought he had scored after latching on to a great lay off from Dan Parkinson following a Mark Lovell short free kick, smashing the ball high into the net only to see the linesman’s flag raised for off side.

On 70 minutes ,after a rare attack from Peacehaven. Jamie Brotherton went close with a bicycle kick that only just cleared the Bay crossbar. Five minutes later Mark Lovell put the Bay 2-0 up after receiving an inch perfect cross from Giogio Russo to head in.

Herne Bay should have gone three up after Steven ita was flattened by the Peacehaven Keeper Tangara, Referee Mr. Paul Lister pointed to the spot but Danny Walders kick was saved by Tangara. Within 2 minutes the Bay were 3-0 up when Sam Hasler fired in a screamer past Tangara from 20 yards.

In the final minute Peacehaven almost pulled one back when Jack Rowe-Hurst fired in from an acute angle that Jack Delo saved well and from the resulting corner cleared his lines with a monster punch down the pitch.

Herne Bay now face Rochester United away in the 1st. Qualifying . Round on the 12th September.

“Funny atmosphere today, it was really quiet all across the ground”, said Denly, “but it was important to do our jobs today and when it’s not quite happening it’s important that quality comes through and Sam Hasler came off the bench to score, and the second goal was outstanding, a quality cross from Georgio (Russo) and a quality header from Lovell. Rochester United will be an interesting game for us, we’ll be favourites and we’ll go there with confidence, but it’s the FA Cup and you get these games”.
