Ray Kelly's match report:
Herne Bay concluded their pre-season fixtures with a 1-1 draw against Barkingside from the Ryman North Division. This match was a very robust “Friendly” which provided both teams with a good work out. For the first 10 minutes Barkingside were quicker to the ball with Kofi and Jonathan Adebayo combining well down the Bays left flank thus giving Michael Turner and Liam Quinn a real going over in the Bay defence.
After only 10 minutes Joe Nelder had to leave the field after a crunching tackle from Junior, he was replaced by Elliot Cutts. As the half progressed Kane Butler and Marl Lovell both went close for the Bay, both efforts were well saved by Betch in the Barkingside goal.
On 25 minutes Gary Sayer was adjudged to have fouled Adebayo in the penalty area, the Ref. pointed to the spot and Adebayo’s kick was brilliantly saved by Jack Delo, leaping to his right and holding on to the ball.
Two minutes later Barkingside took the lead with a hotly disputed goal when Jonathan Adebayo appeared to nudge the ball into the Bays net. Just on half time Danny Walder fired in a free kick from 30 yards that Betch saved brilliantly.
The second half saw Herne Bay take the game to Barkingside and on 52 minutes Steven Ita ‘s run down the left resulted in a corner which The Barkingside keeper once again tipped over. In the 55th. minute Manager Sam Denly made the first of many changes , bringing on Kane Butler, Tom Youngs, James Turner and Danny Williams, these players were quickly followed by Jordan Casey and Sam Hasler.
On 68 minutes Bay should have equalised when Danny Walder crossed a great ball to Dan Williams who fired into the net but the Referee ruled the goal out for a foul on Walder !!!!! he didn’t play the advantage rule. Nathen Eastwood, Peter Brown and Connor Sanders were the next to take the field in the 73rd. minute. With all the Subs used Dan Williams pick up a knock reducing the Bay to 10 men but the no.2 Goal keeper Brad Cummings came on to play on the left wing for the final 10 minutes. With 5 minutes left on the clock James Turner latched on to a Sam Hasler free kick to equalise, giving the Bay a well deserved draw. All in all Sam Denly used 20 players throughout the match.
