Herne Bay FC Over 60's travelled to Romford on Sunday 16th October for the National Over 60's SE Regional Final, writes Ron Boddy.

There should have been three teams in contention, Herne Bay, MK MaD Walkers and Croydon Casuals. However before the day Croydon Casuals withdrew so it was to be a playoff between the other two teams, 20 minutes each way with a 5 minute half time break.

Herne Bay's resources were stretched with Trevor Brown withdrawing at the last minute with a knee injury picked up in practice the previous Monday. So they traveled with only 6 players, and no substitutes. Herne Bay then had to face a 4 hour journey to Romford, sitting at the Dartford Tunnel for 1 hour 45 minutes due to an incident on the bridge leading to the tunnels.

The match kicked off at approximately 1.30 pm. Within 3 minutes Herne Bay were ahead when Harry Roberts scored. A minute later David Gilham added a second and Herne Bay were in control. However MK Walkers forced their way back into the match and after 7 minutes pulled one goal back. Herne Bay went back up the other end of the pitch and Gerry Allan made the score 3 - 1. Half time came with no further goals.

The second half started with a flurry of goals. Within 3 minutes Herne Bay had added three further goals through Harry Roberts (2) and Gerry Allan. MK Walkers hit back and scored a good goal....6 - 2. Within a couple of minutes David Gilham had added another goal....7 - 2. MK Walkers then scored with a deflected free kick....7 -3. Herne Bay added two further goals through David Gilham and Harry Roberts before MK Walkers scored their fourth,,,,9 - 4. Then in the space of five minutes Herne Bay took the score to 14 - 4 with goals from Harry Roberts (3) and Gerry Allan (2). The final act of the date just before the finish was for MK Walkers to score their fifth goal.....final score 14 - 5.

Herne Bay are now through to both of the All England finals, over 50's and over 60's....
