The league leaders and leading goal scorers Cray Wanderers were made to work very hard to get the victory today. They started the game like an express train and could have been 3 up
inside the first 5 minutes but two good saves from Jordan Beeney and a poor finish by Freddie Parker kept the scores level.
Bay weathered the storm and started to provide their own threat on keeper, Nick Blue.
Both sides were displaying good attacking flair and it was rather surprizing that no goals came in the half. Debut for Michael-Frazer Osunkoya who had a couple of powerful shots whistle over the bar. An injury just before half time meant that he was substituted at the start of the second half by Sami Meziane.
No sooner than the second half started Cray had taken the lead; full back, Ben Mendele was given too much space twenty yards out and he struck a sweet left foot volley into the top corner of Beeney’s goal. Straight from the restart Matt Fry fired in a shot that forced Blue into a full stretch diving save to push the ball around the upright. This turned out to be Fry’s last
involvement in the game as he felt a pull on his hamstring and was substituted by James White.
Cray took control of the game but were not really looking like increasing their lead.
Then the turning point in the game, with Ben Gorham stretchered off Bay had lost their two central defenders in a dominant 15 minute spell by the visitors. Having replaced Gorham, Danny Rumbol will not consider this as one of his better performances. Two minutes after coming on he fouls in the area allowing Tom Phipps to increase the lead from the penalty spot with 20 minutes left in the game. This was Bay’s 9th penalty conceded this season!!
Bay didn’t give up and started to press forward and were rewarded in the 80th minute when they gained a penalty after Jay Leader pushed Tom Carlton in the box. Up stepped Jake Embery to send Blue the wrong way, bringing Bay back into the game, but their hopes were dashed after Rumbol was dismissed for denying a goal scoring opportunity by pulling Parker’s shirt as he drove through on goal. Going down to 10 men restricted Bay’s attempts to get the equaliser but for the final three minutes made gallant efforts to grab that goal but Cray held firm to secure the points.
